Description of work:
The artist has filmed his mother who reads to him over the phone the rejection letter from the British embassy to which the artist has applied for scholarship: “I applied for the scholarship. The British embassy i.e. their Department of Culture has rejected my application. I received the mail to my old address in Velenje. Mom read the letter to me over the phone. Mom doesn’t speak i.e. has the knowledge of foreign languages (perhaps a little German). I made the subtitles after the sound of the read letter.”
Mladen Stropnik (1977)
He is active in three areas within the art field: the first area are “fine arts” (painting, drawing – realistic and graphic motives); the second one is art video (video personas, multi-screen video installations, graphic videos); the third area is experimenting with mutual interweaving of the two media – painting and video – in 3D space.
He graduated in 2001 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana where he also completed his M.A. degree. He was recipient of Student Prešeren Award. He had so far several individual exhibitions and took part in numerous collective exhibitions at home and abroad. He was invited to the 12th Biennale of Young Artist From Europe and Mediterranean in Naples, Italy. In 2004 he participated together with Sašo Lukšič and Robert Jukič at the Liverpool Biennale and in Detroit Museum of New Art, USA.
